GE LED Energy Efficient Light Bulbs

GE shifted from incandescent lighting products to energy efficient CFL and LED light bulbs in 2007.

LED energy efficient lighting Energy efficient Energy Star rated light bulbs, such as CFL bulbs, use 75% less energy, produce 75% less heat and have 10x the lifespan of standard light bulbs. LED light bulbs save even more ... with some LED manufacturers claiming up to 80-90% energy savings and an LED light bulb lifespan of up to 15 years.

GE Energy Efficient Lighting

GE Consumer & Industrial closed seven incandescent light bulb plants in 2007 in response to demand for more energy-efficient lighting.

GE will focus more of its energy efficient lighting resources on developing and producing compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) and LED light bulbs because incandescent lights have fallen out of favor.

The U.S. EPA cast the spotlight on CFL energy efficient lighting during its Change-A-Light campaign with several lighting companies joining to encourage consumers to switch to energy efficient CFL or LED lights.

"Global market demand for the most common household lighting product - the incandescent light bulb - has dramatically declined over the past five years due to new energy efficiency lighting standards and light bulb technology advancements," said Jim Campbell, GE Consumer and Industrial's president and CEO.

GE is investing in new energy efficient lighting technologies, such as LED lights, organic LEDs and high-efficiency incandescent light bulbs, he said.

"In the last four years alone we have invested more than $200 million on energy-efficient lighting," Campbell said.

LED (Light Emitting Diodes) Lights by GE

Whether you are new to the LED lighting industry or a seasoned LED professional, you can use these resources to help educate you on the energy efficient LED light market, lighting technology and GELcore products.

LEDs Are a Disruptive Lighting Technology

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are compound semiconductor devices that convert electricity to light.

Invented by GE scientists in the 1960s, LED lights are vastly different from traditional incandescent, fluorescent and neon lighting products.

Energy efficient LED lights stand out because unlike lamps that can shatter, they are robust and highly resistant to shock and vibration. Due to the solid-state nature of LED lights, there are no filaments to break, no moving parts to fail and no glass components of any kind. With long lasting LEDs, breakage during transportation, installation or operation - a common problem of traditional light sources - is virtually eliminated. This LED light bulb robustness speeds installation times and installer training to reduce lifetime energy and maintenance costs.

The benefits of using these highly energy efficient LED bulbs vary depending on the application, but typical technology features and lighting benefits include:

  • Up to 90% energy-cost savings
  • A long life of up to 50,000 hours
  • Minimized maintenance hassles and costs
  • Low-voltage operation
  • Excellent cold-weather performance
Environmental friendliness is also a factor, as LEDs do not contain mercury.

LED Lighting Applications

According to industry sources, the LED lighting industry grew nearly 50% year-over-year during 1995 - 2004, and the LED lighting industry growth trajectory between 2004 and 2009 was expected to nearly double, from $3.7 billion to $7.3 billion.

Many lighting industry observers would attribute these high-growth forecasts to the low penetration of LED lights in general illumination (1%), signage lighting (5%) and lighting for transportation (25%) applications. GE Lumination is positioned to continue as an industry-leading innovator in the energy efficient lighting industry.
