Living Roofs Need Vegetated Engineering and Design
Vegetated roofs - often described as green roofs, living roofs, or ecoroofs can cool cities and reduce cooling costs.
Living Roofs, Green Roofs, Ecoroofs and Water Tightness
Well-designed living roofs provide advantages beyond insulation and watertightness qualities.
Vegetated roofs - often described as green roofs, living roofs, or ecoroofs - are surging in popularity. They are remarkable "green machines" that can cool cities, reduce stormwater runoff, improve runoff quality, increase open space, extend overall roof life, and reduce cooling costs. Vegetated roofs can be spectacular rooftop amenity spaces that increase a building's market value and appeal, too.
Vegetated roofs require special designs to meet building codes. Specialized construction parameters include minimal weight and cost to satisfy local regulations or to qualify for local government incentives. These thin-skinned, lightweight vegetated roofs are not typically visible from the ground and are often only accessible by maintenance crews.
Landscaped Living Roofs are Energy Efficient
Whether the living roof is an installation for apartments, commercial buildings, government facilities, or homes, the landscaped living roof is an energy efficiency installation as well as an amenity that typically includes at least some intensive vegetated roof areas and a viewing or walking path. The thicker the vegetated roof, the more varied the plant species palette it can support.
Irrigating Green Roofing
Additional engineering is required when irrigation is introduced, and both structural and aesthetics are involved when pavers or paved areas, vine screens, and hardscape elements are incorporated into this form of environmentally-friendly roof design.
