Greenhouse Gas Management Institute Offers Online GHG Courses
Greenhouse Gas (GHG) management courses for professionals and continuing education from Greenhouse Gas Management Institute
Earth Council Geneva - ECG-Geneva has been the world’s largest online learning center for sustainable development. Since 2002, it has been the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat’s platform for the training of international experts, tasked with reviewing the national GHG inventories of member states. ECG partners with the UN, governments, universities, and other NGOs to offer courses on global trade, biodiversity, and sustainability.
The GHG Management Institute works in partnership with the GHG Experts Network and ClimateCHECK. We are also very proud to be working with the world’s best experts on GHG management. The GHG Management Institute provides two options for taking courses. First, individual learners can enroll in any of the open courses. Second, if you are a participant in a program with one of our partner organizations, you can login directly to the relevant program and choose the courses applicable to you.
All courses are provided through the Internet. Packages will be offered for particular audiences, such as corporate environmental and sustainability managers, sector-specific environmental management consultants, and NGO program managers. Overview courses will also be offered, targeting managers who need to have a clear overall perspective of the emerging landscape for GHG management.
Courses vary, but some of the key concepts included can be:
Accounting principles
Defining applications for inventory
Design and development of GHG inventories,
Establishing GHG boundaries for your organization,
Identifying emission sources,
Establishing base year,
GHG targets,
GHG quantification procedures,
Reporting standards and options
Inventory quality management, and
Preparing for verification.
GHG Management Institute is a partnership of Earth Council Geneva, GHG Experts Network, and ClimateCHECK
GHG Courses include:
- Basics of Organizational GHG Accounting: State of the Art
Many companies and other organizations are taking action to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are a cause of climate change. Starting with an inventory of their sources and emissions (e.g. carbon footprint) is a good basis to design a management system for controlling and reducing emissions in the best way possible.
- Setting Up a GHG Information System for Corporations and Organizations
Many companies are taking action to manage their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that are a cause of climate change. Establishing a GHG accounting data and quality management systems is a good basis for controlling and reducing emissions in the best way possible.
Cross-cutting methodologies
- GHG Accounting for Stationary Combustion
This course will provide technical training on the development of an emissions inventory for stationary combustion sources sufficient to meet a variety of tracking needs.
- GHG Accounting for Mobile Combustion
This course will provide technical training on the development of an emissions inventory for mobile combustion sources sufficient to meet a variety of tracking needs.
- GHG Accounting for Purchased Energy
This course will provide technical training on the calculation of Scope 2 emissions from electricity and heat consumption for meeting a variety of tracking needs.
Sector-specific Methodology
- GHG Accounting for Service Sector Corporations and Organizations
This course will train experts in conducting an emission inventory for service sector organizations, which do not engage in industrial activities.
- GHG Accounting for Forest Lands
This course will train experts in preparing inventories related to forest carbon and other land use change activities.
- GHG Accounting for Agriculture Activities
This course will train experts in preparing inventories related to agricultural activities.
GHG Program Implementation
- Setting Up and Managing a GHG Reporting Program
This course will train managers in how to design, establish, and operate a GHG reporting program for organizations.
Project- level accounting
Courses for those interested in working on greenhouse gas emission inventories for organizational entities (e.g., corporations), commonly referred to as “carbon footprints.”
Core Overview
Basics of Project-level Accounting: State of the Art (
Many companies are doing special projects or developing new technologies to reduce or avoid greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that cause climate change. These GHG projects are a way to reduce the overall emissions of a company or to create tradable credits that other companies can buy to offset emissions in order to become carbon neutral.
- CDM and JI
This course will provide an overview of the specific aspects of the Kyoto Protocol Clean Development Mechanism and Joint Implementation project methodology and monitoring processes.
- Project Developers Course
This course provides an introduction to project development for greenhouse gas emission reduction projects, covering project planning, finance, management, verification, and ongoing maintenance.
Project-type specific
- Agriculture Projects
This course will focus specifically on the methodologies for emission reduction projects from the agriculture sector.
Product footprint accounting
- Product Footprint Accounting Course and Labeling
This course will review the technical approaches to accounting for emissions associated with the upstream and downstream (e.g., manufacturing, use, and disposal) of products and/or services.
Mitigation and Management
- Analyzing footprint data and assessing mitigation opportunities in supply chain
This course will focus on the management of supply chain relations and how to develop programs and incentives for suppliers to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and tracking their progress.
Cross-Cutting
- Emission Reduction Assessment
This course will provide and overview on how to identify mitigation opportunities, assess the emission reduction potential of each opportunity, and complete a mitigation cost analysis.
Energy Efficiency
- Monitoring and Evaluation
Train experts in monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and verification energy-efficiency projects.
- Commercial Buildings
Train experts in monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and verification energy-efficiency projects for commercial buildings.
- Residential Energy Efficiency
Train experts in monitoring, evaluation, reporting, and verification energy-efficiency projects for residential buildings.
Professional GHG Service Providers
Verifiers and Validators
- Verification of Entity-level Inventories for Professionals
Intended for those intending on being professional greenhouse gas service providers. This course focuses on the ex post verification of inventories from organizations by independent third-parties.
- Validation of emission reduction projects for professionals
Intended for those intending on being professional greenhouse gas service providers. This course focuses on the ex ante validation of emission reduction project proposals by independent third-parties.
- Verification project-level emission reductions for professionals
Intended for those intending on being professional greenhouse gas service providers. This course focuses on the ex post verification of the emission reduction claims of project developers by independent third-parties.
Carbon Disclosure Project
- Reporting: Carbon Disclosure Project: How to respond to the questionnaire
This course will provide a comprehensive overview of how to complete the CDP questionnaire, focusing on the reporting of organizational GHG emissions.
- Interpretation: Carbon Disclosure Project: How to intrepret and use corporate reports
This course will provide managers, investors and other stakeholders a comprehensive overview of how to analyze, intrepret, and use corporate reports submitted to the CDP
