Waste Management Converts Additional Landfills into Energy and Habitat Resources

Waste Management increases green and renewable energy initiatives going forward from 2007.

With each person in North America producing four and a half pounds of garbage each day, Waste Management has become a leader in environmental stewardship,” said Steiner, president.

Waste Management Invests in Waste-based Energy, Recycling, Fuel Efficiency, Technologies and Protecting Habitats

Waste Management, North America’s largest provider of waste and environmental services, announced an environmental initiative that will include investments in waste-based energy, recycling, fuel efficiency, new waste technologies and protected habitats. Specifically, the company plans to:
  • Increase waste-based energy production. Today, Waste Management creates enough energy for the equivalent of 1 million homes each year. By 2020 it expects to double that output, producing enough energy for the equivalent of more than 2 million homes.
  • Increase the volume of recyclable materials managed. Waste Management currently manages 8 million tons of recyclables; by 2020 it plans to capture enough of the increasing volumes to manage more than 20 million tons.
  • Direct its capital spending of up to $500 million per annum over a 10-year period to increase the fuel efficiency of its fleet by 15 percent and reduce fleet emissions by 15 percent by 2020. The company also expects to invest in technologies to enhance its waste business.
  • Preserve and restore wildlife habitat across North America.

By 2020, Waste Management plans to increase by more than four times the number of facilities – from 24 to 100 – certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council, and increase the number of acres set aside for conservation and wildlife habitat to approximately 25,000.

Corporate Waste Sustainability Reporting

Waste Management reports the following environmental progress:
  • Waste Management supplies enough waste based energy to replace over 14 million barrels of oil per year.
  • In 2006 alone, Waste Management recycled enough paper to save 41 million trees.
  • Waste Management’s landfills provide more than 17,000 acres of protected wildlife habitat – the Wildlife Habitat Council has certified 24 of these sites.

Waste Management now handles 8 million tons of recyclables but by 2020, it wants that figure to exceed 20 million tons.

It will spend up to $500 million per year for 10 years to improve its fleet’s fuel efficiency by 15 percent. It also wants emissions from its fleet to drop by 15 percent.

"Over a 10 year period, a 15 percent reduction in the fuel used by our trucks amounts to about 350 million gallons of fuel and a reduction of about 3.5 million metric tons of CO2 emissions," said David Steiner, Waste Management’s CEO. "This could also result in a cost savings to Waste Management of $1 billion between today and 2020 at today’s diesel fuel prices."

Build Landfill Gas to Energy Facilities

The company announced in September that it would build 60 new landfill gas to energy facilities across the country. It currently operates nearly 300 landfills across the U.S.

Waste Management, based in Houston, Texas, is a leading provider of comprehensive waste management services in North America. Subsidiaries provide collection, transfer, recycling and resource recovery, and disposal services. They are also a developer, operator and owner of waste-to-energy and landfill gas-to-energy facilities in the United States. Customers include residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers throughout North America. California Installations by Waste Management

At many Waste Management landfills, segments of land are set aside for the creation and management of wildlife habitats and wetlands. The Wildlife Habitat Council's Wildlife at Work Certification program focuses on wildlife management and employee and community involvement. Fifteen Waste Management facilities have received WHC certification, and 14 additional sites are working toward certification.

Altamont Landfill & Resource Recovery Facility, Livermore, Calif. - The site has 1,300 acres actively managed for wildlife habitat opportunities. Certified since 2003.

El Sobrante Landfill, Corona, Calif. - With 600 acres of undisturbed open space, operates under a plan approved by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Certified since 2003.

Kirby Canyon Recycling & Disposal, Morgan Hill, Calif. - More than 25 percent of the land is devoted solely to endangered species, habitat enhancement projects and environmental study. Certified since 2002.
