Motor-driven Equipment Energy Efficiency

Energy management of motor driven systems reduces costs by improving equipment efficiency.

Energy management of motor driven systems reduces costs by improving equipment efficiency.

Motor driven systems consume over half of all electricity in the United States and over 70 percent of all electricity in many industrial plants. Even a modest improvement in the energy efficiency of motor driven systems can produce significant energy savings.

Energy Management of Motors

Industrial plants save energy to reduce ever-increasing utility costs that reduce profits, erode capital and maintenance budgets, increase product costs, and reduce competitiveness.

Tune up and Optimize the Electrical Distribution System

The plant electrical distribution system has a significant influence on motor efficiency and performance. Begin the electrical system tune-up with a search for and correction of poor contacts, since these are most likely to result in a catastrophic system failure and possibly a fire.

Survey Motor Driven Systems

Field evaluation of motors is essential in making informed decisions regarding motor selection and use. Prepare a strategy for surveying and analyzing plant motors. Large motors and motors that operate for extended periods of time should head the list of motors surveyed.

Analyze Motor System Efficiency Opportunities

To identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and cost savings, you need to analyze information from the motor survey. Using standard engineering analysis techniques, estimate the motor efficiency and load. You can calculate the economic feasibility of replacing the existing motor with a more efficient model by determining the energy and demand savings of the new motor relative to its incremental cost.

Implement a Preventive and Predictive Maintenance Program

The traditional purpose of preventive maintenance has been two-fold: keep equipment from failing prematurely and keep equipment calibrated for optimum performance. Predictive maintenance refers to scheduled testing, measurement, and trending of results over time to identify and correct impending failures or poor performance.

Establish an energy management program for motor driven systems

  1. Establish an overall energy management program
  2. Review utility bills
  3. Tune up and optimize the electrical distribution system
  4. Survey motor driven systems
  5. Analyze motor system efficiency opportunities
  6. Establish a motor improvement plan
  7. Implement a preventive and predictive maintenance program
