Anti-Graffiti Coatings for Walls and Surfaces

Anti-graffiti products are coatings that protect walls by allowing graffiti to be removed without damaging the painting or wall surfaces beneath. Some coating systems are designed to protect surfaces against weathering, UV exposure, rust, chemical, and impact as well as graffiti damage.

Permanent and Sacrificial Protective Coatings

There are two different types of anti-graffiti coatings on the market: PERMANENT and SACRIFICIAL.

Permanent coatings are designed to be impervious to the graffiti and also impervious to whatever products are used to clean off the graffiti. After the graffiti is cleaned off the mural the coating still remains intact on the wall.

Sacrificial Coatings

Sacrificial coatings are meant to be removed, taking whatever is on top of them off along with the coating. The coating is then re-applied over the cleaned area.

Coatings have been used in jail detention areas, public restrooms, park restrooms, showers, locker rooms, gymnasiums, operating rooms, laboratory clean rooms, racquetball and handball courts, kennels and dog rooms, kitchens, public corridors, car and truck wash facilities.

Anti-Graffiti Coatings

Anti-graffiti coatings are available in both clear and opaque formulas for use on exteriors of buildings and retaining walls of concrete block and other surfaces.

Special removal sprays are used to loosen the painted surface and dissolve the graffiti paint. Once loosened, the graffiti is power washed to remove the graffiti paint and neutralize the surface.

Demonstration of Anti-Graffiti Products in Los Angeles

The Social and Public Arts Resource Center (SPARC) has tested anti-graffiti coatings and established a test section of a concrete block wall behind their offices where representatives of various products apply their protective coatings to a brightly painted multi-colored wall surface.
