Wal-Mart and Cleantech Network Launch Innovation Portal

Wal-Mart has unveiled a project (2007) created in partnership with the Cleantech Group, founders of the Cleantech Forum, that had been in the works for over a year.

Rand Waddoups, Wal-Mart's Senior Director for Corporate Strategy and Sustainability, is launching a web portal that gives cleantech innovators an easy way to present their projects to Wal-Mart, as a way of helping Wal-Mart reach its goals of zero waste and 100 percent renewable energy.

The portal, at, is not currently live to the public, but Cleantech representatives said it would be posted soon.

Part of the new program involved raising the visibility of the cleantech solutions to its independent software vendors, showcasing cleantech companies on its website and other publications, and use its Imagine Cup competition to spur the roughly 100,000 participating IT students around the world to create green software solutions that can save the world.

The site will a way for companies who want to work with Wal-Mart on its sustainability goals to submit their proposals, which will be reviewed by the Cleantech Group and presented to Wal-Mart's executives.

Cleantech Defined

Clean is more than green. Clean technology, or "cleantech", should not be confused with the terms environmental technology or "green tech" popularized in the 1970's and 80's. Cleantech is new technology and related business models offering competitive returns for investors and customers while providing solutions to global challenges. Where greentech, or envirotech, represents the highly regulatory driven, "end-of–pipe" technology of the past with limited opportunity for attractive returns, cleantech is driven by market economics therefore offering greater financial upside and sustainability.

The concept of cleantech embraces a diverse range of products, services, and processes across industry verticals that are inherently designed to,

  • Provide superior performance at lower costs
  • Greatly reduce or eliminate negative ecological impact
  • Improve the productive and responsible use of natural resources

Cleantech spans many industry niches and is defined by the following eleven segments:

  • Energy Generation
  • Energy Storage
  • Energy Infrastructure
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Transportation
  • Water & Wastewater
  • Air & Environment
  • Materials
  • Manufacturing/Industrial
  • Agriculture
  • Recycling & Waste
