A Tribute to YOU...Your Sacrifice Matters!

Sacrifice is happening all around us. Green isn't all rosy.

Find green business solutions

Having concentrated on business solutions for the past two years, I'm feeling the weight of "green fatigue" being felt by many consumers...and business leaders. So much change. Such visibility. So many decisions to make.

But there's also hope. By seeing incremental change happening, we witness the practical possibilities. We start to examine our assumptions. And the vision becomes clearer. We can start to see the destination point... a carbon neutral lifestyle.

"Protecting the vulnerable from the threat of climate change is about changing what we all do, and that requires political action as well as changes in personal behaviour.

Burying carbon underground and lighting our bedrooms with the power of the atomic nucleus or the tides are things that need to be arranged by governments, both directly — by making the economic costs of carbon emission fall on the processes that emit it — and indirectly, through basic research and spurs to technology development.

The (2007) Bali meeting provided just a taste of the testing political discourse ahead. Behind that lies the hard reality of the personal costs of mitigating climate change, which will fall alike on those who bear them — whether willingly or unwillingly." Nature

What I'm seeing -- and isn't being talked about much -- is "sacrifice". The younger generations see sacrifice as a negative, and they insist that green can be achieved without sacrifice. My experience indicates otherwise. Maybe that's the parent in me. Parental sacrifice just isn't understood until you've been there. And sacrificing for your child isn't negative -- it's a reality check and an investment in life, in survival and in community. The sacrifices of caring are the most powerful and rewarding acts we have the privilege of achieving.

Collective sacrifice is part of the sustainable communities movement, too. "But collective action has a positive and uplifting side, too. The IPCC (United Nations Nobel Peace Prize winner) is a case in point. Its members have sacrificed time that they would rather have spent on new research to do something for the world at large....To produce something that the hundreds of authors can be proud of, and in which the nations of the world have all, to some extent, invested their trust, is no mean thing. The IPCC's collective efforts span decades."

Sacrifice is happening all around us. Green isn't all rosy. Working ahead of the onslaught of shortages and pollutants and waste is never easy. But those who are sacrificing their time, their leisure, economic potential and sometimes, even their health -- are investing in our community. Our shared survival. That that is what sustains us.
