Serious Materials Reduces Drywall Emissions Footprint

Noise and energy reduction building and industrial materials produced by Serious Materials, Sunnyvale

interior design and air quality Saving wall finishes Drywall production consumes almost 1% of all U.S. industrial energy consumption – creating 25 billion pounds of greenhouse gases in the process.

EcoRock Low-energy Drywall

Today the market for high LEED-point building materials is higher than commodity pricing. The range of drywall pricing is very wide, with specialty products such as mold-resistant materials that are twice the price of the regular products.

In 2008 Serious Materials, Sunnyvale, CA, will be introducing the EcoRock® low-energy drywall family of products. "These advanced drywall products use virtually zero energy in their core, resulting in zero CO2 emissions production. This gives them the lowest carbon footprint of any drywall product by an order of magnitude, with a large positive impact on the environment and energy use," says Kevin Surace, Serious Materials president and CEO.

Drywall accounts for a substantial fraction of the energy used in an average single-family home, and substitution of EcoRock will save 1.6 tons of greenhouse gas emissions - allowing a substantial contribution to fighting climate change with each and every home built with it.

Almost one third of CO2 in this country comes from the manufacturing of goods -- comes from industry. About one third comes from building heat loss and cooling, and about one third transportation. People are waking up to that, and looking for produts that are manufactured in a way that doesn't generate CO2. And it turns out that's hard to find today.

"With awareness comes more market demand, but we already see the market demand in the commercial LEED spaces to be higher than we can meet," Surace reports.

After Manufacturing Comes Building Operations

Buildings consume 40% of all BTUs in the United States. "We also plan to introduce ThermaProof high-insulating windows in 2008, designed to substantially reduce the energy lost through windows, the building's carbon footprint, and it's lifetime cost of ownership. And future members of the EcoRock family will weigh less than standard drywall, saving on transportation costs and energy use; and have a higher thermal insulation R-value, meaning buildings consume less energy for operations, also reducing their lifetime footprint and cost of ownership.

Serious Materials' first products, originally marketed under the Quiet Solution name, fulfill society’s demand for places and things that are quiet.

Noise is pollution, causing physical and psychological stress. QuietRock® soundproof drywall, QuietWood® and related products are used in residential and commercial construction and provide easy, reliable and cost-effective noise reduction.

With growing regulations for higher urban density, these products allow builders to offer desirable, low-noise living in noisy, previously undesirable areas like urban centers and along highways – directly supporting sustainable zoning approaches to land use by reducing transportation needs, thereby saving energy and reducing emissions.

Quiet® products address serious issues like how to improve life for billions of people around the globe in urban in-fill projects and busy city-center high-rises; improve education through less noise; improve family life through more sleep and less noise-based stress; and support investment decisions by builders on where to develop projects. QuietHome® branded communities drive the value proposition that quiet is an achievable standard, to both homebuyers and to builders.

The Quiet line of products incorporates advanced polymer technology in their soundproofing products including:

  • QuietRock® soundproof drywall
  • QuietWood® soundproof wood
  • QuietGlue® viscoelastic damping glue
  • QuietCar® automotive coatings
  • QuietHome Windows™ high STC windows

Builders can replace costly, failure-prone resilient channels with a more reliable soundproofing solution. The results can been easier, more cost-effective and more reliable than other soundproofing methods. And for the home owner, they can enjoy a high quality, economical home theater/listening room.

The end result of the QuietRock retrofit of lodging facilities can solve sound intrusions and prevent noise from being a source of guest complaints.

Serious Materials has two plants for their noise pollution product line, QuietRock. One is in Sunnyvale, Calif., one in Newark, Calif. The EcoRock plant is going into Stockton, Calif.

Serious Materials also manufacture products that produce or recycle energy, primarily on an OEM basis today. For example, they are a primary manufacturer of high-efficiency solar collectors for other companies.
