Environmental Impact Report Released for Sunrise Powerlink

(1/3/2008) The California Public Utilites Commission (CPUC) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management released the Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for San Diego Gas & Electric's (SDG&E) proposed Sunrise Powerlink. The draft report identified five superior alternatives to the Sunrise Powerlink that would be less damaging to the environment, including local, gas-fired power plants, renewable energy projects, and modified routes.

Findings show that the proposed transmission line would cause 50 negative impacts to the region that cannot be mitigated and would create numerous direct impacts within Anza-Borrego Desert State Park including de-designation of State Wilderness, degradation of views and recreational opportunities and impacts on Traditional Cultural Properties.

SDG&E filed an application to the CPUC for the power line in August of 2006. The plan is to construct a $1.256 billion, 150-mile transmission line with a capacity to import nearly 1,000 megawatts of electricity. The proposed Sunrise course would cut through Ramona, Rancho Penasquitos, and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.
