green sustainable education and schools The Promising Practices in Afterschool (PPAS) Listserv brings together the worlds of youth development, school-age care, and education. On the PPAS website,, you can search for promising practices and share your own good work with others to help build the field of afterschool. School teaches reading, writing and arithemetic...but to meet the increasingly complex world of adulthood, children are needing years of experience with technology and teamwork -- to supplement individual achievement that is measured on tests.

Afterschool technology programs teach students business technology and entrepreneurial skills

Afterschool programs are available in a variety of venues -- the school, daycare centers, specialized classes and tutorials, and teen programs at churches, etc. What they have in common is support for the kids growth and development. What some are doing is more advanced than others -- especially where technology is concerned. And that's where business education can shine. The following report by one of the PPAS participants provides some interesting clues for how businesses can support the development of tomorrow's entrepreneurs and employees. Our afterschool programs (7) utilize technology courseware for academic achievement as well as some of our "activity hours".

What we have found in the “activity hour” is that the technology has to be project based, i.e. stock market game, build your own business, champion chess (even comic strip production) to have a buy in and get them coming back at that age.

With the web design – you can use something as easy as PowerPoint to post to html- the real question is- can they actually post it somewhere on your website? Our after school teachers first job is to see what contests, projects, grants, or collaborative projects are being used in other middle-high schools to have some virtual connect.

If no connection to the Internet-what can you do with Technology? Let the group decide to build their own business and allow the “group process” determine what tools are needed. We have a mug-making machine, mouse pad press, and a “twisted-pen” machine that school teams can use, design their project, pay for their materials and determine if they can make a profit for places or events they want to attend. Low technology maybe, but digital cameras and Photoshop are necessary – all of the Microsoft products are necessary to order, finance and sell their products.
