California Finds That Ethanol Content Increases and So Does Emissions

California researchers advocate electricity, hydrogen and waste-based fuels instead

While heralded as a world leader in addressing climate change, California has taken a wrong turn in reducing greenhouse gases by allowing corn-based ethanol into vehicle gas tanks, a University of California, Berkeley, analysis revealed. Ethanol can be expected to add more global warming gases in the years ahead as the percentage of ethanol in gasoline climbs, according to scientists. William J. Kelly writes in CA Energy Circuit, that the analysis comes after California lifted the cap on the ethanol content of gasoline from 6 percent to 10 percent last year in preparation for a low carbon fuel standard. The strategy is aimed at cutting the carbon intensity of motor fuel by 10 percent by 2020. "All the numbers we've seen so far go the wrong way," said Michael O'Hare, U.C. Berkeley professor of public policy. "It looks like these numbers are pretty big.

O’Hare advised the state to "squeeze ethanol out of gasoline" In its place, he suggested that regulators look for other ways to propel vehicles to cut carbon emissions.

"Many of us like the idea of pushing more electricity into cars," especially when it is made out of green energy, according to O’Hare. He advised regulators in presenting the analysis to the California Air Resources Board’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard Working Group. He also suggested hydrogen as a preferred fuel, as well as biofuels made from waste or through new chemistries, including cellulosic ethanol and algae-to-diesel processes.

What Really Works?

"There are two key things for solving climate change — a new energy system is number one, and stopping deforestation is number two," Alex Farrell, a UC Berkeley energy professor said.

"Biofuels: Linking Support to Performance," summary and conclusions from the Joint Transport Research Centre's June 2007 Round Table in Paris published a key finding: "Volumetric production targets for biofuels fail to provide incentives to contain costs, to avoid environmental damage or even to ensure greenhouse gas emission reductions are delivered. Carbon content targets for fuels, accompanied by certification, are a better alternative."
