State of Green Business in US A new report, "State of Green Business 2008," researched and written by Joel Makower and the GreenBiz team is the first report to take stock of green business activities in the United States.

The report lauches the GreenBiz Index, a set of 20 indicators of green business progress that GreenBiz will update annually. For example, it measures how efficiently companies are using resources, reducing toxics, purchasing green fleet vehicles and renewable power, and reporting social and environmental performance.

The report also features the 10 key green business trends of 2007 as well as dozens of "Editors' Picks," lists we've compiled of the best books, websites, reports, business initiatives, and other resources of the past year.

All together, we think it will help you better understand the green business landscape.

U.S. companies are scoring low on most of 20 indicators of environmental progress, Greenbiz.com concludes in its 2008 report.

"Companies, in aggregate, aren't changing quickly or significantly enough to move the needle on climate change and other challenges," said Joel Makower, executive editor of the not-for-profit news-and-research Web site.

The GreenBiz Index of environmental progress monitors performance on a range of indicators from carbon emissions to paper use to vehicles in corporate fleets.

The report notes progress in eight of the categories. Those include

  • dropping greenhouse gas intensity,
  • declining paper use and recycling,
  • clean tech investments and
  • development of green buildings

Not so positive was progress in

  • alternative-fuel vehicles,
  • energy-efficient office buildings,
  • carpooling and public transit use by workers,
  • volume of e-waste

"Just about everybody seems to be doing something (green) these days," Makower said. Big companies put out press releases, while smaller ones do it with little or no fanfare. "In some ways, it's a quiet revolution."
