Computer E-Waste Strategies to Reduce Toxic Waste in Environment

End of life accountability of an organization’s expired computers is imperative in today's world of identity theft and corporate espionage.

E-waste issues include protecting our environment and abiding by state and federal regulations to insure that our old computers do not end up in a landfill or on a boat to China.

Safeguarding Information on Computers at the End of Life

Controlling information is an important reason end of life accountability is so important. Many people have no idea how much information is stored on a computer hard drive. Information can include the inner workings of a business to personal information about employees. If that personal and corporate information gets into the wrong hands important trade secrets can be lost and employees' identities can be stolen.

In order to protect employees and company information the federal government implemented numerous laws and regulations.

E-waste service companies have developed to provide systems that help companies comply with these laws and regulations in disposing of their e-waste in order to avoid being fined by the government and sued by employees.

Laws and Regulations that Affect Destruction of Information

Some of the more common wastes found in electronics are mercury, lead, and cadium. To protect our selves from these hazardous wastes the state of California enacted the SB 20 law, which makes it illegal to dispose of specified electronics into our landfills (computers, monitors, printers, fax machines, etc).

In California it is illegal to dispose of computers, monitors, printers and fax machines in landfills.

FACTA- This law requires the destruction – "shredding or burning" or "smashing or wiping" – of all paper or computer disks containing personal information "derived from a consumer report" before it is discarded.

FERPA- is a federal law intended to protect the privacy of student education records. Disclosure is only allowed by written consent of the parent or eligible student.

HIPPA- to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of all electronic protected health information the covered entity creates, receives, maintains, or transmits.

Sarbanes Oxley Act- companies must demonstrate a consistent application of their stated records retention policy in order to verify the SEC filings consistently match all paper and electronic documentation.

Compliance and Accountability Documentation Is Part of Best Practices
