Central Coast Vineyard Team for Sustainable Vineyards

Sustainable farming applied to vineyards in Central California

Find green business solutions
California water conservation in wine country The Central Coast Vineyard Team is a collaborative partnership of growers, wineries, consultants, researchers and environmental professionals.

Growers are under increasing pressure to reduce runoff and associated sediment and pesticide loads. Membership in business cooperatives provide farmer exchanges of information and innovation, as well as marketing efficiencies.

Members of CCVT such as Steve DiGangi, President of Coastal Vineyard Management, Inc. (CVM), have benefited from cooperating in the Biologically Integrated Farming Systems Project (BIFS) Project in which he experimented with an organic transition block where no herbicides were sprayed. DiGangi began the project in order to learn how to grow organically certifiable wine grapes. He explained, “Doing projects like the BIFS organic transition vineyard project makes me farm differently and work outside my box.

Vineyard Floor Management

Vineyard floor management is an important component of the Positive Points System™ (PPS) as developed by the Central Coast Vineyard Team (CCVT). Floor management practices include weed control and cover crop management, which typically are conducted in different parts of the vineyard floor.

Weed control is conducted on the vineyard floor directly beneath the grapevine rows to prevent weeds from competing with grapevines for water and nutrients and to prevent weeds from growing into the canopies where they can interfere with harvest operations. Cover crops are planted and managed in the row middles to reduce soil and water erosion, to improve the chemical and physical properties of soils, and enhance pest management by reducing dust for mites or the attracting and supporting of beneficial insect populations.
