Recycle Video, Audio and Computer Tapes
We've been getting several calls asking where to recycle various kinds of magnetic media: audio tapes, video tapes and computer tapes. The answer isn't simple...but it is now getting attention.
The plastic in these communication tapes is generally shredded and sorted for plastic recycling. If you have a significant amount of these tapes, you will have to pay for having them recycled. Where does shredded plastic go? Hmmmmmmmmm... hard to tell. I'm still tracking that down, and I'm hoping the answer isn't China. (Don't get me started on the transportation impact of that kind of global movement of raw materials). Repurposing Computer TapesIf you have content on tapes and need to provide secure destruction of the data -- that costs extra. There are some companies available who will repurpose your tapes and legitimately destroy and certify the destruction of the DATA before they sell the tapes. One such company is Infinity Data Solutions."There is a secure form of data destruction that complies with Sarbannes Oxley, HIPAA, Bank Secrecy Act, City, County and Federal Organizations such as DOD that is almost entirely green and provides them with more security without shredding, incineration or other common non–green practices," explains Jack Cruz of Infinity Data Solutions.

Magnetic Tape from Audio and Video CassettesMagnetic tape itself doesn't seem to be recyclable, as far as we can find. We've called a number of suppliers and apparently e-waste recovery doesn't yet include the millions of tapes that are in stored in corporate and media libraries and gradually phased out or converted to digital archives.California's CIWMB Directory of Recyclers and MaterialsTo find the approvied Solid Waste Facilities in California, visit the excellent online directory provided by the CIWMB (Cal. Integrated Waste Management Board): www.ciwmb.ca.gov/profiles/Facility/The directory is well categorized by type of material, type of facility and by county. Facility Types in the Directory
