FAA is expanding approval of continuous-descent arrivals to reduce fuel use, noise levels and time in air
FAA tests show savings of 1,300 pounds of CO2 per flight, and noise levels from three to six decibels lower within 25 miles of the airport.
"Continuous-Descent Arrival" Flight Patterns save Jet Fuel
Initial UPS tests show a savings of two to four minutes on the final 100-150 miles of flight and an increase in landing capability of up to 10-15% by maximizing the possible landing slots.
FAA has approved continuous-descent arrivals in Louisville, Sacramento, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix and Salt Lake City, with plans for further expansion.
