Municipalities Develop Recycled, Reclaimed and Desalinated Water

Brown and Caldwell helps municipalities recycle, desalinate and reclaim water supplies. Here's an overview of strategies.

Water Supplies Are Morphing to Meet Demand

As populations grow, water supplies shrink and water shortages and drought become more widespread, many cities and counties are turning to recycled wastewater for relief.

"California Water News: Special Edition", Brown and Caldwell's informative newsletter with supporting web-based water news, is concentrating water development coverage to bring you a closer look at how municipalities are putting recycled, reclaimed and desalinated water to good use.

Some, like the Orange County Water and Sanitation districts in California are at the forefront, using treated wastewater to replenish the groundwater aquifer. Launched in January, the new system is the largest and most high-tech in the world. The system produces 70 million gallons a day, enough water for 500,000 people a year.

Brown and Caldwell designed the UV disinfection system, product water pumping station, pipeline, and influent screening facility, as well as provided engineering services during construction.

Water Strategies Across the Nation

In Florida, Miami-Dade County is building a $350 million wastewater recycling system — and the governor is poised to sign into law a bill that would mandate wastewater reuse in South Florida.

Tampa Bay Water is tapping the ocean, using desalination technologies to supplement its water supply. And scores of communities are recycling wastewater for irrigation and industrial use. Even President Bush got in on the action earlier this month, signing a bill authorizing federal support for Northern California cities pursuing development of new water sources.
