Carbon Capture Storage Recycles Vehicle C02 as Fuel

The Georgia Tech concept car uses an onboard fuel processor to separate the hydrogen and carbon elements in liquid hydrocarbon fuels. The hydrogen then powers the engine, while the carbon is stored on board.

Georgia Tech has developed a concept that can utilize the CO2 emissions from the vehicle -- all over again.

Based on research and studies, nearly two-thirds of global carbon emissions are created by small polluters that include cars.

The Carbon Capture Storage concept that will be developed by Georgia Tech is already used to reduce the carbon emissions in power plants as carbon catching systems.

But Georgia Institute of Technology wants to take it to the next level and use this technology to combat the pollution coming from automobiles. The Georgia Tech concept car uses an onboard fuel processor to separate the hydrogen and carbon elements in liquid hydrocarbon fuels. The hydrogen then powers the engine, while the carbon is stored on board.

Georgia tech researchers have already succeeded in creating a fuel processor capable of separating the carbon and hydrogen in liquid fuel - the CO2/H2 Active Membrane Piston, or CHAMP, reactor.

The good thing about this technology is that it will be carbon emission free, and it is also renewable and efficient. An onboard fuel processor would separate the hydrogen and the carbon elements in liquid hydrocarbon fuels.

This technology, if it will materialize could greatly cut emissions coming from automobiles.

The Georgia Tech research was published in Energy Conversion and Management. The research was funded by NASA, the U.S. Department of Defense NDSEG Fellowship Program and Georgia Tech’s CEO (Creating Energy Options) Program.
