Flood Hazard Area in Sutter County Holds Annual Rainy Season Risk

Sutter County Water Resources Chief Daniel Peterson says it's time for hundreds of people living south of Yuba City to think about the annual rainy season. "All of this that is in blue is going to be a special flood hazard area," said Peterson as he pointed to a huge map.

And News 10 also did a story to put the YouTube video into perspective: Suter County Flood Maps story.

Eighteen months ago the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducted tests on levees along the Feather and Sacramento Rivers and the Sutter Bypass. They wanted to determine if the levees are strong enough to withstand possible flooding. The results are in for tests done on levees that protect Sutter County south of Stewart Road and east of the Sutter Bypass. "They were unable to demonstrate that the levees meet the new criteria," said Peterson. "They don't offer 100-year flood protection."

The Sutter County Floods of the 20th Century video shows images from floods 1903 to 1997.

Flood Insurance Can Jump, too!

Not only is property and life at risk, but even more likely is that flood insurance rates can jump. Risk management has numerous components that start today.

The 9-minute video also reminds flood zone residents who have mortgages that they need to buy flood insurance. "People who get flood insurance before the December 2nd deadline will get a discount," Peterson explained. "Yearly preferred rates for a house worth $250,000 are about $300 right now. After the deadline they will rise to a standard rate of about $1200. But premiums for people who get insurance after the deadline could conceivably jump to about $2600 to $2700. So it's a lot cheaper to get insurance before the deadline."
