California is Largest US Generator of Geothermal Electricity

California is the United States' largest generator of electricity from geothermal energy. In 2006, California received nearly five percent of its electrical energy from geothermal resources (about 14,000 Gigawatt-hours).

California has over 600 active, high-temperature geothermal wells (with fluids over 212° F) and 230 injection wells.

California's Geothermal Section oversees the drilling, operation, maintenance, plugging, and abandonment of geothermal wells on state and private lands to ensure public safety and protect underground and surface waters.

Coproduction of Geothermal Energy from Oil and Gas Fields

New sources of geothermal energy are being developed, including the coproduction of geothermal power from oil and gas fields in California. Hot water produced from oil and gas wells can be used to generate geothermal power under certain temperature and flow conditions.

Geologic Carbon Sequestration

Carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) is a technology aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions generated by the burning of fossil fuels during industrial and energy-related processes. CCS involves the capture, transport and long-term storage of carbon dioxide, usually in geological reservoirs deep underground that would otherwise be released to the atmosphere.

CCS is an important part of the State’s efforts to assess methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions within California’s overall strategy to mitigate anthropogenic climate change.

The Department of Conservation’s Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources and the California Geological Survey are preparing a report recommending how California can facilitate the adoption of geologic carbon sequestration.

Geothermal Field Maps

View and download the large-scale map of California’s geothermal fields and digitized field maps.

The Division of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources prepares and publishes oil, gas, and geothermal field maps for the State of California. The maps are updated regularly and cost $5. They may be purchased in person at any district office or by mail from the headquarters office in Sacramento (see PR1S, the map index, for more information). Some maps may be downloaded in PDF format. Additionally, Well Location Database files (as self-executable DBF files) are available.

Geothermal Resources for California

Geosteam can be used to access non-confidential scanned well records, including logs, and view monthly production and injection information.

Geothermal District Contacts

District staff in Sacramento, El Centro, and Santa Rosa answer questions about geothermal resources. Staff members permit wells, make field inspections, and sell maps and publications.
