Composting Programs Promote Long-term Solid Waste and Recycling Sustainability

Composting is the decomposition of plant remains and other once-living materials to make an earthy, dark, crumbly substance that is considered gold amongst gardeners. Composting yard and kitchen wastes by recycling the byproduct is a critical step in reducing the amount of garbage sent daily to landfills for disposal. Thirty percent of the waste stream in the USA is comprised of yard or kitchen wastes.

Zero Waste with Composting

In an effort to explore ways to meet Zero Waste, Culver City partners with the community to develop composting programs. The City of Culver City and Echo Horizon School hosted a workshop that featured backyard and worm composting. Experts answered questions and gave out information on how to develop an in-home compost program. The program supported the city's new Sustainable Community Plan.

Composting in Education

Additionally, Echo Horizon School has developed a schoolwide program to compost their food scraps. Four teachers, Ellis Enlow, Avon Leekley, Anita Melnick and Roz Henderson are working together with local Culver City Garden Club member Steve Coker to get the program up and running.

Community-Wide Composting Programs

As the community becomes more aware of how their actions impacts the environment, the use of composting to turn organic wastes into a valuable resource has become a popular way to renew the earth's resources; and as in little as five years, composting may be as commonplace as recycling aluminum cans is today. Workgroups and families can contribute to the 'composting revolution' by composting coffee-room, yard and kitchen wastes at home or right in the office. New worm-composting units offer a no muss-no fuss ...and no odor way to let nature work her magical soil creation system.

Culver City has partnered with the Culver City Garden Club and Jennie Cook’s Double Dutch Restaurant to promote composting through a pilot program.

Whatever your style of composting, there's plenty of room to get involved in the compost revolution of turning scrap into soil into food!
