Certification of Green(er) Computers and Electronics Equipment

GREENGUARD Environmental Institute has extended its toxic chemical emission certification beyond the construction industry to computers and other electronics equipment.

The nonprofit founded in 2001 certifies more than 150,000 building and furnishing products and materials for volatile organic compounds (VOC) and other chemicals. Now the program will expand to measure chemical outgassing of electronic products while in operation. The results will then be cross-referenced against the short- and long-term health risks associated with exposure of the chemicals.

"Electronics, including monitors, computers and printers, can emit chemicals and particles into the air, particularly when in use," said GEI CEO Carl E. Smith. "These chemicals may trigger a range of health issues, including asthma, allergies and other irritating reactions."

Lenovo's M57/M57P "Eco" is the first device to earn GEI's certification, GEI said. The computer is also EPEAT Gold-rated, as well as the company's ThinkVision line of nine LCD computer monitors.

RoHS DIrective in Europe

The U.S. has no requirements regulating chemical emissions from electronic devices, unlike in Europe, which has enacted the RoHS Directive, GEI said.

The GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) is an industry-independent, non-profit organization that oversees the GREENGUARD Certification Program. As an ANSI Authorized Standards Developer, GEI establishes acceptable indoor air standards for indoor products, environments, and buildings. GEI’s mission is to improve public health and quality of life through programs that improve indoor air. A GEI Advisory Board consisting of independent volunteers, who are renowned experts in the areas of indoor air quality, public and environmental health, building design and construction, and public policy, provides guidance and leadership to GEI.
