Green Jobs Study for Economic Development
Environmental job training is necessary to support green job creation and economic development for communities.
With a $100 billion investment in projects that encourage environmental living, the US could create 2 million jobs in two years, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

California's share of this green job boom, based on the gross domestic product, would be $12.7 million and 235,198 jobs, the study says.
Green Careers and Green Jobs with Environmental Training
The nonpartisan group commissioned the study conducted by the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to focus on six areas government funding could spur growth:
- solar energy
- wind turbines
- retrofitting buildings
- improving electricity grids
- developing biofuels
- building mass transit options
The Los Angeles school district will have $7.3 billion in bond funds to build green buildings.
While the economy, especially in Southern California's Inland region, treads water as the housing market continues to sink and more home owners fall into foreclosure, local and federal governments are seeking green fixes for buildings, roads and energy sources.
As more workers get trained in technical positions for environmental construction and electrical engineering, labor costs for green projects will go down.

California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, has a LandLab that focuses on environmental training, supported research on landfills, refuse recycling and materials recovery processes and their effects on the environment, developed strategies for site revegetation and multiple use
Permaculture Institute of Southern California, Laguna Beach, provides environmental training on water management systems, waste-cycling and composting, organic and edible landscaping, home design and energy management.
Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo hosts the Renewable Energy Institute dealing with applied environmental research and education in sustainability and renewable energy.
The Community Environmental Council, Santa Barbara, has extensive experience designing and implementing recycling-based economic development programs, urban sustainability policy initiatives and environmental education and community gardens.
Southern California Gas Company's Energy Resource Center provides ongoing environmental training classes on efficient energy management, indoor air quality and restaurant/institutional food conservation practices.
Local Green Building Case Study
The Meridian Business Park being developed by LNR Property Corp. on former March Air Force Base land is one of 6 finalists for the national Green Development Award from the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties. LNR has used the concrete from older roads and buildings it demolished and recycled it into four miles of new road, according to a statement from the company.
There are at least 17 key industry sectors that promise green jobs for residents of Southern California. The community colleges and private environmental training courses are preparing job seekers for these environmental and green jobs.
