Growing Power for Sustainable Urban Food Sources

Growing Power brings sustainability to communities with food production, youth employment and education, fresh food and local responsibility for one's neighbors.

I grew up on a small farm in a suburban community in Arkansas, and spent many, many hours learning about nature and our natural resources on that diverse plot of land on which we gardened, raised farm animals, cared for pets, raised food from an orchard and a vineyard and berry patches. It was an amazingly diverse food and productivity hub. It was the roots of urban agriculture... for me. I've shared several articles with my readers about urban agriculture, urban farms, and rooftop gardens. Today I learned about "Growing Power", an urban farming nonprofit that has grown up outside my view, but certainly after my own heart. Located in Milwaukee, WI, this robust urban agriculture nonprofit has incorporated just about every concept I've dreamed about and explored in my search for urban sustainability: composting, gardening, a learning center, aquaculture, fresh veggies and juicy fruit.

We need this movement to thrive and complement the Farmers Market movement in California!

Growing Power, Milwaukee, WI Urban Farming

Growing Power serves as an urban farm, a ”living museum” or “idea factory” for the young, the elderly, farmers, producers, and other professionals ranging from USDA personnel to urban planners.

Training areas include the following: acid-digestion, anaerobic digestion for food waste, bio-phyto remediation and soil health, aquaculture closed-loop systems, vermiculture, small and large scale composting, urban agriculture, perma-culture, food distribution, marketing, value-added product development, youth development, community engagement, participatory leadership development, and project planning.

Growing Power, Inc. is a non-profit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds and the environment in which they live by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food. This mission is implemented by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner.

Growing Power has multiple farm sites located in Wisconsin and Illinois. Some of our farms are in urban neighborhoods and other farms are in rural settings. In addition to the farms where we raise our produce and livestock, we assist other projects in Milwaukee and Chicago.

Chicago's Urban Agriculture

Growing Power created a 20,000 square foot urban farm on Chicago’s lakefront adjacent to Buckingham Fountain and Lincoln Memorial in Grant Park. Over 150 varieties of heirloom vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers are grown at the urban farm in the heart of downtown Chicago.

The partnership demonstrates that the social benefits of urban agriculture reach beyond local food miles and food security but also encompass youth economic development and re-establishing biodiversity through the production of organic vegetables, herbs and other edibles in a city space.
