Nurse-Family Partnership to receive funding under Obama's Family Agenda

Healthcare starts before birth and the most formative years for good health are 0-2. The Nurse-Family Program brings needed education and support for young families.

First-time parents have long lamented that their babies don't come with manuals.

Nurse-Family Partnership on Obama's Family Agenda

The Nurse-Family Partnership provides some of that hoped-for parenting assistance by providing home visits by trained registered nurses to low-income expectant mothers and their families.

Researchers at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis concluded that these programs produced an average of five dollars in savings for every dollar invested and produced more than $28,000 in net savings for every high-risk family enrolled in the program.

The Obama-Biden plan will assist approximately 570,000 first-time mothers each year.

Nurse-Family Partnership

Nurse-Family Partnership® is an evidence-based, nurse home visiting program that improves the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of low-income, first-time parents and their children. The Nurse-Family Partnership National Service Office, located in Denver, Colorado is a nonprofit organization that provides service to communities in implementing and sustaining this program.

The National Service Office collaborates with Public/Private Ventures, based in Philadelphia, Invest in Kids, based in Denver, and other partners in the states where Nurse-Family Partnership is currently established.

Communities that have Nurse-Family Partnership can expect three important improvements in the lives of families:

  • Mothers will have healthier pregnancies,
  • Child health and development will be improved, and
  • Mothers will become more self-sufficient.
The need is growing, as indicated by the recent findings of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that reported an increase in the teen birth rate for the first time since the early 1990s.

Nurse-Family Partnership in California

Solano County in California recently won a $1.3 million federal grant over five years to run the Nurse-Family Partnership program with Child Welfare Services. Trinh Hartney is NFP's western region program developer. The program only accepts pregnant women to ensure the program will have the greatest impact on the child. Beyond maternal skills, the program also aims to help new moms learn how to take better care of themselves.

There are nine California sites of the Nurse-Family Partnership. The Nurse-Family Partnership Program replicates the Nurse Home Visitation Program that was developed by D. David Olds. Funding comes from Federal Title 19 funds and from the counties.

Green and Sustainable Communities Connections

Part of good parenting is providing a toxin-free environment. Opportunities abound in helping young parents set up a healthful home, balance home and community involvement, and support their lifestyle with green options such as organic and locally grown food, non-toxic cleansers, low dust and contaminants, reducing the chance of asthma with carefully choosing housing locations and triggers for breathing problems.
