It's hard to fathom what will pull us out of this massive economic meltdown ... but we in the green field do know that we need better vehicular technology. Plug-in cars have the potential to use solar powered energy, which would reduce air pollution as well as other impacts of fossil fuel burning. We can make a difference by voicing our support of positive steps, and our concern for problems that don't support sustainability. Please consider the following issue...

Thousands Respond to Plug In America Action Alert on Stimulus Bill Alert Warns that Tax Credits for Plug-in Vehicles Are in Jeopardy

FEB. 4, 2009—Thousands of clean-vehicle supporters have already responded to this morning's Plug In America action alert warning that tax credits for all types of plug-in vehicles may be removed from the stimulus bill in Congress.

“Send a strong message to your representatives in Congress and the President telling them that you want plug-in electric vehicles to be successful along with the truly green jobs they can create,” urges Plug In America legislative director Jay Friedland (view alert at

Plug In America, in collaboration with several EV companies, has been working with Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), John Kerry (D-MA), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and Bill Nelson (D-FL) to get plug-in vehicle tax credit language into the stimulus bill.

In jeopardy is the doubling to 500,000 the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) eligible for a tax credit of up to $7,500, and the expansion of a separate consumer tax credit to PHEV conversions and two- and three-wheeled EVs, which are the most affordable and widely available EVs on the road today.

These provisions are contained in S.271, the Freedom Act of 2009, an extension of the Freedom Act of 2007, sponsored by then-Sen. Barack Obama, Sens. Cantwell and Hatch. Despite bipartisan support that includes backing from Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), as well as Hatch, the stimulus-bill tax credits are in jeopardy.

EV companies working on the grassroots effort with Plug In America include Brammo, Aptera, Persu Mobility, Zero Motorcycles, Myers Motors, Electric Motorsport, HumCycles, Vectrix, A123/Hymotion and Plug In Conversions Corp.

“Show Washington just how serious you are about wanting affordable plug-in vehicles on the road now,” Friedland writes. “…It is time to ask Congress to advance the next generation of transportation options. Each and every voice they hear will make a difference.”
