Technology Transfer for innovation and product development is boosted by the National Technology Transfer Center.

Successful R&D or technology licensing often requires a partnership in which individual entities each bring a needed skill or ability into the process.

By creating partnerships among industry, government agencies, and academia, the NTTC contributes to economic development on local, regional, and national levels. These partnerships stimulate company growth and job creation as new products are developed for the commercial market or for government use. Such activity is an economic shot in the arm for a community, a region, or an entire industry.

Technology Transfer for Small Business

The NTTC is involved in the NASA Alliance for Small Business Opportunity (NASBO), thereby increasing opportunities for American small businesses to participate in technology development and production. The small-business community is one of the most significant sources of innovation in the United States, and through NASA's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs, these companies receive support to help close the research-to-product gap, bringing economic benefits to communities.

Since 1989, the NTTC has been cultivating relationships among industry, academia and government agencies to produce licenses and other agreements that benefit all parties.

Technology transfer involves moving a technology developed for one organization or environment into another. Often this movement is from a federal or university laboratory into a commercial operation, capitalizing on the investment in research and development that was initially directed to government use or to the advancement of science.

Bridging the gap from the university or government lab to the commercial world can be difficult, but the NTTC is experienced in managing the journey for clients. Whether it’s identifying a proper fit between a technology and an organization’s needs, or negotiating the inherent differences between the research lab’s focus and the commercial sector’s interests, the NTTC specializes in driving the process forward for successful technology transfer.
