Continuous Coating Corp. Removes 70,000 lbs of Lead from Manufacturing

Find green business solutions
Industry is fraught with potential for unintended pollution -- and it takes a forward thinking company to face its use of dangerous raw resources to develop continual improvement. Lead is one of those dangerous materials. And lead takes a heavy toll on our communities and our children's health. Reducing lead in manufacturing process is possible...if you have the right solutions.

U.S. EPA and Congressman Ed Royce honored Orange, California-based Continuous Coating Corp. for removing 70,000 pounds of lead from their metallic electroplating and sheet metal manufacturing process.

Kenneth Harel, general plant manager, and Grace Meda, environmental coordinator, were recognized with EPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP) award for the removal of 70,000 pounds of lead by modifying their equipment, processes and by using less toxic raw materials. One of their facility commitments for the NPEP program was to change all of their metal halide lighting fixtures for either TSHO fixtures or T8 -- thus, reducing their electrical usage by 60%. They are also RoHs Compliant (restriction of hazardous substances).

Continuous Coating prides itself on over 200 years of employee experience in the art of electro galvanizing. New training for employees on the electro zinc coating process includes metals, testing, quality, service, environment and safety."We will seek to prevent pollution before it is produced," their website states.

By using more environmentally forward manufacturing techniques and consuming less toxic raw materials, Continuous Coating Corp removed 70,000 pounds of lead and reduced the potential for employee and surrounding community health issues.

Continuous Coating Corp. is a member of EPA’s National Partnership for Environmental Priorities (NPEP), which is a voluntary partnership program focused on reducing the use of potentially hazardous priority chemicals from products and processes. The program’s goal is to work with industry and the public to reduce the use or release of four million pounds of priority chemicals by 2011.

Children under six years of age are among the most vulnerable to the harmful effects from lead-based paint and lead hazards, such as dust and contaminated soil. Lead poisoning can have serious, long-term consequences, including intelligence deficiencies, learning disabilities, hearing impairment, hyperactivity and/or behavioral problems.

By forming partnerships with EPA, NPEP partners representing industry, business, municipalities, federal facilities, and tribes, are successfully reducing the use of and/or recycling toxic chemicals, including mercury and lead. NPEP is part of the EPA’s Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC), an effort to conserve natural resources and energy by managing materials more efficiently.
