Veterans Conservation Corps in Washington State...Therapeutic Transition, Green Job Training and Valuable Conservation

Veterans Conservation Corps is sprouting in Washington state and being developed for expansion to additional states. This decompression time provides vets with new skills, stress management and new stateside friends. And their generous donation of volunteer time improves our homeland environment at the same time. Win-win-win-win...!

I am a member of the California Conservation Corps' "Green Team" advisory board and have been learning how therapeutic and skill-building jobs in the environment can be for troubled youth. That time in nature with close companionship of teammates is also proving to be very helpful for our returning veterans serving in the Middle East.

For veterans, clearing heavy brush with an ax in the woods is a way to "work out demons." Many vets returning from deployment overseas come back from Iraq seared by memories of war and unsure about how to re-enter civilian life.

The Veterans Conservation Corps can serve as a bridge to civilian life. And the Veterans Conservation Corps initiative helps hundreds of vets study and train to enter the growing "green" jobs field.

The primary mission of the Veterans Conservation Corps is to assist veterans by providing volunteer opportunities on projects that help protect and restore Washington’s rivers, streams, lakes, marine waters and open lands.

Since July 2005, twenty-five veterans have participated on a variety of projects

The VCC is looking for land that needs stream restoration, re-vegetation or native plantings. They could also use your support with your local Veterans Administration!

Are you a land-owner with 20 or more acres?

Does your land have areas of Critical Concern? (Critical concern areas are areas along any water frontage, fresh or salt-water; habitat for endangered or threatened species, plant or animal; pristine environment such as old growth or original prairie; recharge aquifer area; wetlands; etc.)

If you answered yes to these questions then the Veterans Conservation Corps may be able to help you!

The Veterans Conservation Corps is looking for land to conduct any or all of the following activities:

  • Stream restoration
  • Accessible trail building or rebuilding
  • Re-vegetation or native plantings
  • Restoration of prairies or native grasslands
  • Removal of invasive plants
If you are a land-owner interested in having the Veterans Conservation Corps complete a project on your land, please contact Mark Fischer at: 360-586-1073 or MarkF@DVA.WA.GOV
