Employment benefits come in all shapes and sizes. Creative thinking can put unusual combinations together to benefit everyone involved. Here's an example.

Tough times require tough discipline -- but not in the way you might think. Tough innovation means using the resources you HAVE in better ways. Do you have extra desks? Do you need bizdev ideas? Here's how one innovative thinker put those disparate "needs and haves" together to benefit multiple people:

Ad Agency Offers Desks To Unemployed; Asks For Ideas In Return

NPR Morning Edition

Ariel Horn has opened up his small Manhattan ad agency, The Horn Corp., to anyone in the industry who's looking for work. They come with their laptops and send out resumes, Jim Zarroli reports. But Horn also encourages them to brainstorm with him on new business possibilities.

If a company likes one of the ideas, Horn hires the person who came up with it, paying by the project. The innovative business model means that the agency functions like a much bigger company than it really is.

"[We] use the power of the people we have here," Horn says. "While we are a group that's been constructed primarily by our open-door policy, we do like to keep the structure of a real corporation." And the unemployed agency folk get to keep the structure of reporting to a desk outside their homes each day.

Looking "beyond the obvious" can help you dig your way out of a hole. New ideas, fresh perspectives, new talents ... combined with new recipes just need the leavening of new combinations. New solutions.

You might want to make a list of what you "have". Maybe start with excess equipment. Excess supplies.

Add what you "need". New clients. Marketing visibility. People on the street.

Stir gently.

Is there anyone who could use your equipment to help them out of their hole? How could they help you get the word out? Or find new uses for your excess supplies?

Are there unemployed people in your industry niche you could reach out to? Are there unemployment programs that you could tap into to help subsidize the program? (Check out your local Workforce Investment Board... they have Stimulus monies and job training programs for the unemployed and underemployed).

Think differently. Start with what you have. Share the benefits. Share the challenge. Make a bigger pie together!
