I'm fascinated by natural systems, and replicating natural systems for human food production is what farming is all about. Having grown up on an organic / subsistence farm, I'm most interested in farming as part of the family home...a productive home that provides high quality, fresh foods.

Aquaculture is a new approach to growing both protein (fish) and plants for food. Systems are being developed for small greenhouses and outdoor systems. Here are a couple videos that will introduce the concepts of aquaculture to you.

Backyard Aquaponics is a California company that offers "Portable Farms" with a variety of backyard gardening, aquaponics...and even chicken and grub options for food production! Truly fascinating approaches. (Visit their organic and sustainable urban farming systems website

Portable Farms Aquaponics System was invented by The Happy Portable Farmer, Colle Davis, from San Diego. The aquaculture system of vegetables and tilapia fish qualifies to receive an organic label for produce grown in the Portable Farms™ Aquaponics System through the county office of Agricultural Commissioner (in the State of California).

And if you want to go larger, urban aquaculture can be taken to commercial sizes...

Fish aren't the only aquatic species that can be grown in aquaculture. There are also prawns, shrimp, crawdads .
