Want a Solution for Your Kids? School Wellness Councils Go Local
Community sustainability centers on our children's health, their shelter and their education. You can bring Healthy Schools home to your neighborhood with these support tools.
Many states require local School Wellness Councils or Health Advisory councils that are usually made up school staff, students, parents and community members and which implement the School Wellness Policy.
To find out if your school or district has a School Wellness Council or Health Advisory Council, contact the principal, district food service director or other administrator. They should be able to tell you if there is a council, who is in charge, and how you can get involved.
Once you find your local School Wellness Council, offer to help in any way you can. If you see good things being done, be sure to offer praise. If you have a good relationship with the council, they’ll be more likely to listen to your suggestions for change.
School Wellness Councils Purposes
- Advise the school board/district on school/community health issues.
- Identify student/staff health needs.
- Monitor and evaluate implementation of school wellness policies.
- Support the school in developing a healthier school environment.
- Assist with policy development to support a healthy school environment.
- Plan and implement programs for students and staff.
- Tap into funding and resources for student and staff wellness.
