Urban Farming in LA

Urban agriculture is growing...to provide beautification, community greening and food security in urban neighborhoods.

I've tried several times to contact the Michigan based Urban Farming organization without luck. But here is information about the organization in case you can get through to them. However, urban farming is exploding, and even in Los Angeles there are sprouts of urban ag for food security and community beautification.

Urban Farming

Urban Farming's mission is to create an abundance of food for people in need by planting gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, educating youth, adults and seniors and providing an environmentally sustainable system to uplift communities. Urban Farming is an international 501c3 headquartered in Detroit, Michigan that plants food on unused land and space and gives it to the needy.

Los Angeles Office of Community Beautification

"The Food Chain Guardian Walls" were dedicated in November 2009, as an Urban Farming project to beautify the community at The Weingart Center Association, 566 S San Pedro St, in Los Angeles in Council District 14. (Entrance is located at 6th Street courtyard gate, between San Pedro and Crocker.)

The Community Beautification Grant funded "The Food Chain Guardian Walls", an Edible Wall project launched in August of 2008.

The Guardian Walls are beautiful storage containers and panels mounted directly onto the garden walls and provide space for tools and supplies. The Walls also offer acknowledgement to the Food Chain supporters.

Los Angeles Edible Walls

The Los Angeles Edible Walls are located at four sites in and around Downtown/Central City East.

The City of Los Angeles, Board of Public Works' Office of Community Beautification (OCB) provides resources and materials free of charge for stakeholders of the City of Los Angeles. Services include beautification grants of up to $10,000 (CB Grant), hand tools for volunteer cleanup efforts, graffiti removal services (call 3-1-1 to report graffiti), and a school outreach program.

For more information regarding these services, The LA City contact is Salyna Cun of OCB at (213) 978-1041.
