Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) will be available in the near term
Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) will be available in the near term predicts ARB
Sacramento, CA, April 23, 2007 - An expert panel convened by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) believes plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) will be available in the near term and will present these findings at the upcoming May CARB board meeting in San Diego, according to Green Car Congress.
The panel was convened to study the path to adoption for zero emissions vehicles in the state.
According to the CARB web site, "At the 2003 Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Regulation hearings, the Air Resources Board directed staff to conduct a review of Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) technologies and advise the Board."
In its status report, the panel points to PHEVs as a feasible technological step on the path toward meeting the ZEV goals, which were initially set in 1990. In the report, "Status and Prospects for Zero Emissions Vehicle Technology: Report of the ARB Independent Expert Panel 2007" panel experts write:
"It is the Panel's opinion that PHEVs have the potential to provide significant direct societal benefits and are likely to become available in the near future. They may foster future mass market BEVs (battery electric vehicles) by stimulating energy battery development and conditioning mass market customers to accept plugging in...".
