PHEV Research Center

California's Cooperative PHEV Research Center, was launched with fundings from the California Air Resources Board.

Research participants include, among others:

  • Global Electric Motorcars
  • Vectrix
  • ZAP vehicles
  • The 2008 Tesla Roadster and 2008 ZENN neighborhood electric vehicle have been added to the list of vehicles eligible for rebates under the Fueling Alternatives
  • From a study of drivers done by University of California–Davis professor Tom Turrentine, BMW learned that the car's 100-mile driving range was sufficient for most drivers' needs. Nearly half the drivers were able to achieve 100-mile driving range with the MINI E, and most of them fell into the 70 to 100 miles per charge range.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Research Center

UC Davis university's new Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Research Center, Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Research Center, administered by ITS-Davis, is funded by a three-year, $3 million grant from the California Energy Commission’s Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) Program. The center will serve as a magnet for innovative research on consumer response, environmental impacts, and vehicle technology. Its goals are to provide technology and policy guidance to the state, and to help solve research questions and address commercialization issues for PHEVs. The Center will coordinate with existing research organizations including:
  • South Coast Air Quality Management District
  • Electric Power Research Institute
  • Southern California Edison, PG&E, and other California utilities
  • United States Department of Energy
The PHEV Center will conduct or administer funding for research in five distinct areas:
  • Modeling alternative PHEV designs and battery performance testing
  • Impacts of PHEVs on the electrical grid
  • Consumers and PHEVs
  • Environmental impacts of PHEVs
  • Lifecycle costs of PHEVs
