Fun Intro to Aquaponics (Plants + Fish) Urban Agriculture

Find green business solutions
I'm absolutely fascinated by aquaponics and can't wait to put in my own aquaponics system to grow vegetables, fruits, herbs...and fresh fish, shrimps, etc. Yep... all that in a greenhouse... or even a backyard here in Southern California.

Need a bit of humor? Try this music video about aquaponics. :-)

The green story about aquaponics is that this closed system of food production is nicely snuggled into urban settings (both consumer-size and commercial), it uses approximately 80 to 90% LESS water than conventional agriculture, and it is a closed system, so the fish raised don't enter the natural water systems of the community.

All good stuff!

The challenge is the need for a bit of plumbing skill. And supplemented with sensors and governors, you are now a "farmer" and farmers work seven days a week! A closed system isn't foolproof, and it needs monitoring.

But the upside is a robust, potenially organic food production system for fresh vegetarian food ... and/or added marine protein.

Austrailians have turned to aquaponic food production to cope with their prolonged drought, and it might be a good solution for California to consider as well. I'm considering it. And can't wait to get back to farming ... with a new sensible, urban kind of solution.
