Your Health Depends on Genetics, Lifestyle and Environment, Your Place History Matters

GIS atlas information provides maps about your "history of place"... a key element of your health profile.

Bill Davenhall gave a vitally interesting talk at TedMed about how important our "place history" is to our "medical history".

Atlases by the EPA, Dartmouth, and others can now tell us how toxic -- or non-toxic places are that we choose to live, work and play. What's fascinating about that is that my own choices have been about as bad as they can get -- healthwise.

I've lived in Northwest Arkansas, Northeast Oklahoma, North Carolina and Southern California -- all red zones for air quality. Red zones -- the worst air pollution that has been measured!

Bill Davenhall's illustrations included the EPA map of concentrations of Acute Myocardial Infarction.

And here I am, trying to share green and sustainable information with you from Los Angeles. Hmmmmmmm... I'm just glad I'm trying to remedy the situation rather than maintain the status quo.

Watch out for "the best laid plans of mice and men..." my mother used to warn me. It's time to look for a better place to live and see if I can improve the environmental impact of my place history on my medical history.

You can bet I'll be digging into these atlases of place history and sharing this decision making tool with you...
