Gateways for Green Building Courses for Green Building Skills Certification for Target Occupations

Green job training courses in the Gateway for Green Building program qualify graduates for green building industry certifications.

Green job training courses in the Gateway for Green Building program help trainees achieve industry-recognized certifications to qualify for green building and retrofit careers.

Program graduates who complete all courses will be qualified to work in one or more of the following emerging green building occupations:

  • Energy Efficiency Retrofit Technician
  • Home Energy Assessor/Auditor
  • Sustainable Development Technician I
  • Electrical Apprentice
  • Deconstruction Worker

Industry-Recognized Certifications

Those who complete all coursework successfully and pass all final examinations will receive the following industry-recognized certifications:
  • The Home Builders Institute -Pre-Apprenticeship Certificate for YouthBuild Participants
  • Build it Green -Certified Green Building Professional
  • CBPCA -Green Home Energy with Solar Hot Water and Electricity
  • CBPCA -Certificate of Completion
  • Association of Energy Engineers -Sustainable Development Technician I
  • Blueprint for Workplace Success -Certificate of Workplace Readiness
  • RHA -Weatherization and Energy Retrofit Fundamentals Certificate of Completion

Gateways to Green Building Training Courses

Phase I: Fundamentals of Construction, Workforce Entry, Environmental Issues

Phase I of the program introduces the fundamentals of construction, workforce entry, and environmental issues pertinent to a career in Green Building. Instruction will take place at CCEO’s headquarters in Gardena, California.

Phase I: Courses

  • Program Orientation
  • Workforce Entry I

    Workforce Entry I is part of the Home Builders Institute Pre- Apprenticeship Certification (PAC) curriculum, which will be continued by CCEO during Introduction to Green Building I.

  • Environmental Literacy

    Specific environmental literacy topics will include: basic sustainability; the purpose, intent, and experiences of professionals engaged in sustainable building programs; cost and management issues associated with constructing and maintaining green buildings; and community advocacy for sustainability.

Workforce Entry I is part of the Home Builders Institute Pre- Apprenticeship Certification (PAC) curriculum, which will be continued by CCEO during Introduction to Green Building I.

Phase II: Intro to Green Building I-V

Phase II: Courses

  • Intro to Green Building I

    Trainees will learn about safety and First Aid, construction math, tools and construction materials, employability, the carpentry and electrical trades, and weatherization. Successful completion of this module will lead to a Home Builders Institute Pre- Apprenticeship Certification (PAC) for YouthBuild Participants.

  • Intro to Green Building II

    Topics include sustainable sites, energy conservation, water conservation, and indoor air quality. Completion of this module will enable students to test for Build it Green’s industry-recognized Certified Green Building Professional certification.

  • Intro to Green Building III

    Energy fundamentals (25 hours) will cover an intro to renewable energy; basic energy concepts (forms); construction nomenclature (technologies and methods); preconstruction (tool use and an introduction to technical fields), and energy supply and use in California. Those who score 70 % on the exam will receive a Weatherization and Energy Retrofit Fundamentals Certificate of Completion.

  • Intro to Green Building IV

    Twenty-four hours of instruction covering solar hot water installation and design principles will include individual home design and installation needs, reduction of water and energy consumption, energy efficiency, domestic hot water heating, radiant floor heating, and pool heating principles. 24 hours of instruction in solar electricity installation and design principles will cover: electricity use and residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems as a source of renewable energy; how residential solar PV, as a grid tie system, provides electricity to local utility providers to offset peak electricity use; and the design and installation of lighting, heating, ventilation, cooling, and appliance loads based on the unique needs of individual homes.

    The module also includes 8 hours on California building codes, Title 24 requirements, Building Performance Institute standards, and 24 hours of green home energy upgrade training. Successful completion of the Introduction to Green Building IV module will result in a CBPCA Certificate of Completion, and a CBPCA Green Home Energy With Solar Hot Water and Electricity certification.

  • Intro to Green Building V

    20-hour module, lectures by AEE are designed to expand knowledge in the field, and prepare program participants for the exam required to achieve the AEE Sustainable Development Technician I certification. This module emphasizes sustainable sites and an understanding of how the diverse elements of green design, sustainable technologies, and related cost implications can result in a well-defined and manageable sustainable development plan.

Phase III: Community Service and Field Work

Community Service and Field Work

  • Gateways participants may participate in up to 32 hours of field work on qualifying South Bay homes with GRID Alternatives and other community organizations devoted to residential energy efficiency.

Phase IV: Workforce Entry II

  • Develop skills in verbal communication, accountability, ethics, performance, and professionalism. Instruction will take place at the Business Training Center campus in Hawthorne, California. Course instructors will use the copyrighted Blueprint for Workplace Success curriculum developed by the South Bay Workforce Investment Board.

Workforce Entry II: Workforce Entry Skills

  • The Business Training Center at El Camino College provides training in basic workforce skills. Topics include: accountability, ethics, performance and professionalism in the workplace; and Soft Skills, such as career planning, time management, the job market, getting hired, and how to keep a job.

Workforce Entry II: Job Readiness & Apprenticeship Prep

  • Trainers from CCEO will provide 6 hours of instruction designed to prepare students to conduct an independent job search. Students will receive specific information on employer expectations, likely sources of job opportunities in green building, interview strategies, and methods for highlighting Gateways training experiences in order to win the job.

Continuing Education

Successful completion of Gateways training qualifies graduates to participate in additional green building courses sponsored by the North Orange County Community College District—Los Angeles/Orange County Environmental Training Center (LA/ OC ETC) under the California Clean Energy Workforce Training Program. The LA/OC ETC is a non-profit business outreach program that assists businesses with regulatory compliance and environmental management issues.
