Ella Baker Center for Human Rights launches Making Green Work: Best Practices in Green-Collar Job Training.

"We are witnessing investments in green economic renewal. Clean energy industries are among the defining drivers of our economic recovery, particularly in California. In the private sector, U.S. venture capital investment in clean energy technology (the vast majority of which is in California) continues to outpace expectations. Nationally, the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was the nation’s largest-ever public investment in clean energy. And in California, the implementation of the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006 (AB 32), if done well, will supercharge the Golden State’s green economy throughout the next two decades."

California Green Career Training Best Practices

This green career development toolkit includes case-studies and lessons learned from some of California's most successful green job training centers while directing folks to create programs accessible to low-middle income communities and people of color.

"This is a challenging time for workforce development. The U.S. is in the midst of the worst economic crisis in generations, with California being hard hit," said Ian Kim of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights. "Giving communities the tools to provide green job training is an essential part of California's pathway toward economic recovery which will be driven by growth in our state's green construction, solar, weatherization, and other ecological industries."

Making Green Work draws from interviews with successful programs, professionals in the field of workforce development, and leading academic experts. The guidebook also profiles seven organizations who have launched training programs offering readers the opportunity to learn from the successes and challenges each of these leading programs has faced.

The Ella Baker Center and Oakland Apollo Alliance have played a pivotal role in instigating and launching the nationally recognized Oakland Green Jobs Corps, a program that is connecting people who face barriers to employment with opportunities in green construction, solar installation, home weatherization, and other green fields. The Ella Baker Center also played a key part in the “Pathways out of Poverty” section of the federal Green Jobs Act of 2007.
