Submit Oil Spill Cleanup Technology Suggestions to EPA

Your citizenship is calling you. How can you help solve the problem(s) with the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico? There are ways you can help!

Find green business solutions
The Gulf of Mexico is the ninth largest body of water in the world and covers approximately 600,000 square miles. Fishing in the Gulf is (... was!) among the most productive in the world, for shrimp, oysters, and many more species.

The EPA is accepting suggestions for Gulf of Mexico oil spill solutions. Technology only. Hmmm...

The EPA claims they will forward your technology suggestions to the appropriate reviewing official, who will contact you if needed.

EPA will not accept information claimed as confidential business information (CBI) via this website or via email. By submitting information through this website or via email, you acknowledge that none of the information you submit is CBI. If you do submit information claimed as CBI, it will be deleted without review.

But in case you have a solution or two up your sleeve, here's the link to the EPA's "Submit a Technology Solution" webpage.

Data Available at EPA Website

You can also monitor data being collected about Particulate Matter; Total VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds); and Hydrogen Sulfide. Go to EPA Response to BP Spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Environmental data, including air quality and water samples, will be posted and frequently updated on this site as it is collected and validated by EPA’s response teams along the impacted coastlines. This data is meant to determine potential risks to public health and the environment.

A couple unsolicited suggestions...

Of course, I have a few additional suggestions.
  • Get a buzz cut! Organize a local hair cutting demonstration. Donate your hair and hose stuffing to Matter of Trust, a nonprofit who is helping organize a grass roots solution to help sop up the millions of gallons of oil that will be coating animals and beaches and oceanic life. It's small scale, but effective. You can make a difference to at least ONE BIRD, ONE ANIMAL, ONE BEACH.
  • Yell and scream about the loss of life. Human, animal and ecosystem.
  • Quit driving so much. Reduce your use of petroleum products so companies won't feel compelled to drill miles under the ocean.
  • Encourage YOUR company to develop catastrophic risk management plans and procedures. And test them!
  • Tell your political representatives that this is just not acceptable, and to take a "time-out" until they reconsider their responsibilities to their constituents -- yes, people, no, not corporations.
  • Apply your best critical thinking, risk management and common sense thinking to your OWN local community, your home, and your workplace to reduce environmental harm.
  • Never stop learning and making better decisions than yesterday.
...Just a thought from the peanut gallery on Mother's Day.
Carolyn
