Counting Carbon: An imperative and an opportunity— despite lack of a federal program

SAN DIEGO – May 25, 2010 – Energy powers human civilization and supplying that energy demand in the wake of worldwide population growth and the need to mitigate the threat of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions is a challenging issue that cannot be ignored.

Although the world is still at the beginning of an energy transition that will occur over decades, we’ve made progress. Technological innovation, perseverance and collaborative efforts provide snapshots of success around the world—including in the United States where regional carbon emissions guidelines help businesses and organizations begin the transition to renewable energy resources—without a federally mandated program.

President of Shell Energy North America to Deliver Keynote at EngEx 2010

Do you want an opportunity to ask the President of one of the large oil companies the tough questions? EngEx in San Diego will give you that opportunity.

Mark Quartermain, president, Shell Energy North America, will discuss how these carbon emissions markets provide companies the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint as they begin to shift toward low-emission fuels economy in a keynote address at EngEx 2010 coming to San Diego in July.

"Shell is at the forefront of the energy challenge and has to walk the delicate balance between our need for energy and transportation fuels along with concern for the environment," said Kausain Shaikh, Founder of EngEx 2010. "We are looking forward to this keynote speech as it is one of the most delicate business issues facing our world for the next century.”

Shell Energy is a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell), which was named the largest company in the world in by Fortune 500 in 2009. Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemical companies headquartered in The Hague. Shell businesses help meet the world’s demand for energy in economically, environmentally and socially responsible ways.

Quartermain became president of Shell Energy in April 2008, with responsibility for its marketing, trading and storage operations for natural gas, wholesale power and environmental products.

He started with Shell in 1983 and has experience in crude, refined products and risk management groups. He also helped establish Shell’s European natural gas trading activities.

“Mark brings a strong depth of industry experience and will be a strong keynote speaker to highlight our conference,” Shaikh said.

EngEx is coming to the San Diego Convention Center from July 29 through 31. The conference is full of power sessions to create, debate and innovate some of the popular environmental, energy, transportation and water developments for the next century.
