Take a tour of a seed company that makes the most of those few precious inches of packaging space. Allure. Information. And a guide for a complete, successful solution.

Packaging can be more than a container. It can be part of "selling success", instructions, a visual guide for project implementation, and even a collectible when the business adds special attention to design and beauty.

This is the season for gardening and enjoying spring and summer's bounty in the home garden. But where does that seed come from?

I've always enjoyed discovering the behind the scenes process of sustainable businesses, and Botanical Interests has provided a video tour of their seed packaging facility. Enjoy this walk through the big business of little bits of wonder!

California is a major producer of seeds -- both flower and vegetables. But seed companies are also global companies -- importing seeds from around the world. Some even foster heirloom varieties and native plants. But the process of food production usually starts with seeds.

Since Botanical Interests was created in 1995 by Curtis Jones and Judy Seaborn, this Colorado based seed company has focused on three key goals: inspiring and educating gardeners; providing the highest quality seed to customers; and creating a people and earth-friendly company ethic.

Along with the on-site seed starting facility, Curtis and Judy maintain a trial garden in their one-acre backyard, where they host the annual company picnic and team members play “Name that Variety.”

"Packaging" is about more than paper and a pocket. It's about "containing information" that's needed to empower people -- both customers and partners! And every company can enhance the space on their packaging with helpful information... and maybe even make the package do double-duty! That's reuse... one of the cornerstones of sustainability.
