Top Sustainable Paper Issues:

  • Reduce deforestation:
  • Use more recycled content paper
  • Recycle more quality paper

Trees are the major CO2 sequester on the planet. They absorb and store greenhouse gases, and hold them for decades – if we let the trees mature. Since trees are the major feedstock for paper production, our marketing processes can conserve trees by conserving paper – and the options available are as creative as your design team.

"As designers, we have a responsibility to be cognizant of how we impact our world," says Joy Evans, Western Region Sales manager for Mohawk Paper Mills ( "Paper is still the main way people communicate. When computers and desktop printers came along, paper use went up – not down!" Major users of paper are catalog companies – when thousands or millions of catalogs increase their recycled paper content – the impact is significant.

Deforestation is a global problem…and has a global solution when trees are cut for paper, furniture and other business and consumer applications. Environmental stewardship goes beyond compliance because laws can never keep pace with marketplace and nature’s changes.

Environmental Stewardship of Natural Resources and Materials

"We believe that compliance with environmental regulations is the beginning, not the end, of environmental stewardship. Because paper manufacturing makes great demands on natural resources and materials, we go beyond simple regulatory compliance to ensure our environmental footprint is as small as possible." This New York paper mill is a family-owned company that has led the paper industry in sustainable practices, include becoming an EPA-Green Power Partners, provides 60% of their manufacturing electricity from windpower, and is recognized for its green products and processes by a number of environmental agencies including: Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), SmartWood, Green Seal, and the EPA’s Green Power Partner program.

Internal environmental policies make sense for Mohawk, as well. At Mohawk, every employee participates in recycling and waste reduction programs. This combined effort has cut waste stream to nothing more than cafeteria trash and reduced a six-figure garbage bill by more than ninety percent.

List of FSC Green Printers in California
  • Vendors are required to ship materials in returnable containers, reduce packaging materials, and accept returns of unused trial materials.
  • Recovered solids from their wastewater treatment system are shipped to a commercial composting operation for conversion to a high-grade soil conditioner.
  • Obsolete electronic equipment is donated for reuse or offered for disassembly into recoverable component parts.
  • Degreasers and used oils are shipped to a commercial facility for recycling or conversion to fuels.
  • Office wastepaper, cardboard, newsprint, scrap metal, empty propane cylinders, batteries, fluorescent tubes, oil filters, used oil, antifreeze and coolants are all recycled.
  • They communicate their values to their business partners, including end-use customers, specifiers and our product and service suppliers.

Mohawk’s Carbon Neutral Choices

In 2007, Mohawk’s Beckett Concept and Expression lines of paper were certified carbon neutral. The emissions from all of the energy used to make these papers is offset with wind-generated electricity and Verified Emissions Reductions (VERs). Their Green-e certification means they meet the strict environmental and consumer protection standards established by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions. "Carbon neutral" describes products, operations and activities that have had their carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions 1) calculated 2) reduced where possible and 3) "offset" through credits that fund renewable, emission-free energy products.

To help encourage recycling, a Federal Executive Order updated in 1998 requires all federal agencies to use paper with at least a 30% postconsumer content.

Total U.S. paper and paperboard recovery reached a record 53.5 million tons in 2006. With paper and paperboard consumption at 100.2 million tons, this yielded a recovery rate of 53.4% -- up from 33.5% in 1990.

Recovery of printing-writing papers rose by 11% or 1.6 million tons in 2006. That increase, in the face of virtually flat consumption or new supply of printing-writing papers, drove the recovery rate up to 49.0% as compared with 44.1% in 2005 and 34.2% in 1994.

Keeping Water Cleaner

Pulp and paper manufacturers are the largest industrial users of water worldwide. The use of elemental chlorine for bleaching resulted in environmentally hazardous byproducts and pulp producers and paper mills are increasingly replacing traditional bleaching technologies with ECF or “elemental chlorine free” bleaching processes.

California has very limited resident papermills (Fox River Paper's mill in Ripon, CA and Simpson's text and cover mill in Pomona, CA), so the majority of our paper – business, packaging, even toilet paper -- is transported hundreds if not thousands of miles – an impact to consider in any sustainability program. Much of our virgin paper comes from global sources, and our waste paper is shipped to China for cheap packaging. "We need to recycle more quality office papers for use as quality paper pulp," says Joy. Most paper travels more than the average US citizen!

There are policies you can adopt to minimize business paper impact:

  1. Choose paper made with high post-consumer waste recycled fiber
  2. Choose papers with FSC-certified fiber to preserve forest lands
  3. Choose papers made with process chlorine free (PCF) or elemental chlorine free (ECF) pulps
  4. Choose uncoated papers; coated papers yield very little recyclable fiber
  5. Choose paper mills that have received third-party certifications from Green-e, Green Seal and the Forest Stewardship Council
Mohawk actions are focused in five critical areas:
  1. Biosphere protection
  2. Sustainable use of natural resources
  3. Waste reduction and recycling
  4. Risk reduction
  5. Energy conservation

Design is one more way to get the sustainable business message out to your public. Ask for recycled content. Recycle your quality papers. Up the percentage of recycled content whenever possible. Print fewer copies. Print smaller, simpler paper projects. Conserve paper and conserve trees.
