Green Innovation Parks are Sprouting

Green innovation parks help build the infrastructure small startups need to grow their business, create jobs, and bring revenue to local communities. Consider the possibilities...

Oregon

Green Innovation Park being planned by the City of Portland as a showcase and test-bed for green building technologies. The mayor recently signed a deal all the way across the ocean in Sweden to bring the North American hub for Fagerdala's testing, development and expansion of a new green home building system.

Tennessee

Genera Energy, a for-profit company wholly owned by the University of Tennessee Research Foundation, broke ground on Tennessee’s Biomass Innovation Park, a campus that integrates and optimizes the entire biomass supply chain. The Biomass Innovation Park will provide harvesting, handling, storage, densification, pre-processing, and transportation for multiple feedstocks including switchgrass. Located adjacent to the Genera/DDCE demonstration-scale biorefinery in Vonore on 21 acres, the campus will serve as the foundation for all biomass feedstock used to create biofuels, biochemicals, bioproducts, biomaterials, biopower and bioenergy.

The Biomass Innovation Park will also be the site for a $5 million Department of Energy-funded high-tonnage switchgrass bulk handling system and will provide strategic partnership opportunities and serve as a template for regional biomass depots. The first phase of construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2010, in time to store and process switchgrass following the fall harvest.

New Mexico

The Business Innovation Factory and the Santa Fe Innovation Park (SFIP) are creating a real world laboratory to accelerate the development of new alternative energy and energy conservation solutions for the home.

The Code Green Energy Innovation Lab will include a network of homes and provide stakeholders with a better understanding of how citizens utilize and manage energy in the home. Within this real world environment, the Lab will develop and test new solutions, services, and business models that increase energy conservation, advance the use of alternative energy solutions, and decrease the country's overall energy costs and carbon footprint.

The Business Innovation Factory (BIF) creates real world laboratories where organizations can design, prototype, and test new models for delivering value. BIF's mission is to enable business model and system level innovation in areas of high social impact, including health care, education, energy, and entrepreneurship.

Canada

GreenCentre Canada has begun construction and renovation of its new 9,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, located in Queen's University's Innovation Park. GreenCentre Canada and PARTEQ Innovations of Queen's University hold a vision for a new model of commercialization that ensures Canadians benefit from Green Chemistry breakthroughs.

Pennsylvania

Innovation Park at Penn State is a 118-acre business park provides companies with multiple real estate options. Residents of the Park have access to Penn State resources and the support services to transfer knowledge from the University to the marketplace.
