The DOE Hydrogen Program currently includes participation from the Offices of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EE), Fossil Energy (FE), Nuclear Energy (NE), and Science (SC). Each office manages activities that address hydrogen technologies that meet the needs of their respective feedstocks and target applications. As the nation focuses more attention and resources on exploring the potential for a hydrogen energy future, close coordination among these offices becomes critical—this is the role of the DOE Hydrogen Program.

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy covers Biomass, Building Technologies, Federal Energy Management, Vehicle Technologies, Geothermal Technologies, Industrial Technologies, Soalr Energy Technologies, Weatherization, and Wind/Hydropower Technologies. The mission of the Office of Nuclear Energy is to lead the DOE investment in the development and exploration of advanced nuclear science and technology. NE leads the Government’s efforts to develop new nuclear energy generation technologies; to develop advanced, proliferation-resistant nuclear fuel technologies that maximize energy from nuclear fuel; and to maintain and enhance the national nuclear technology infrastructure.

The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States, providing more than 40 percent of total funding. It oversees – and is the principal federal funding agency of – the Nation’s research programs in high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences. The Office of Science manages fundamental research programs in basic energy sciences, biological and environmental sciences, and computational science. In addition, the Office of Science is the Federal Government’s largest single funder of materials and chemical sciences, and it supports U.S. research in climate change, geophysics, genomics, life sciences, and science education.
