Find green business solutions
water shortage and water conservation Water to support the rapidly growing Southern California region is a growing effort -- on all sides of the issue. Greening the water supply involved not only conservation, but right-sizing applications, decreasing groundwater pollution, restoration of our groundwater supplies, restoration of degraded ecosystems...and paying for it.

Water is political. It is vital to life. It is precious.

Knowing where your water comes from and the complex mechanism required to obtain it, transport it, pressurize it, treat it, reclaim it, replace it in the freshwater infrastructure provided by the earth -- it's a big job and requires a massive amount of our community resources.

One member of this human-build water infrastructure is the West Basin Water District. It's task is to "obtain and provide safe and reliable supplemental supplies of high-quality water to member agencies including the communities, businesses and residents they serve..." and that's no small task.

West Basin Municipal Water District is a public agency that purchases imported water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California [MWD]. West Basin wholesales the imported water to cities, mutual water companies, investor-owned utilities and private companies in southwest Los Angeles County. (Imported water is transported through the expansive Colorado River Aqueduct system and from Northern California). To protect against seawater intrusion, West Basin provides barrier water for injection into the South Bay’s groundwater basin. West Basin also supplies the region with recycled water for municipal, commercial and industrial use.

West Basin’s service area uses 220,000 acre-feet of water annually. An acre-foot of water is approximately 326,000 gallons, enough to meet the water needs of two average families in and around their homes for one year.

The West Basin Water Recycling Facility is the largest facility of its kind in the nation and has gained regional and worldwide recognition. Since the early 1990s, West Basin has established itself as a leader in water supply management because of its diverse mix of conservation, water recycling and desalination programs.

Water is the quiet utility. It flows underground and only makes its presence known at the turn of the tap...or when Southern California experiences one of its infrequent rains. But it is vital EVERY day. Clean. Pollution free. Adequate for all our life-support needs. Jot a note of thanks to your local water support team -- they deserve a bit of recognition and a kind word! And if you don't know who they are -- it might be worth your time to investigate. You will be fascinated by what you find!
