Green for the rest of us -- the new phase of green business that will lead people to the goal of sane expectations.

"Thanks to creative designs and low costs, environmentally friendly office practices are gaining in popularity," reports NBC.

Lower cost is the challenge now facing the green industry. Green for the rest of us. The well-heeled consumers and companies that have massive government contracts that require strict adherence to city or state or federal environmental standards have ponied up. But now we enter the middle earth -- the land of "the rest of us."

With consumer debt at an all-time high, who can afford to pay 20% extra for organic or recycled steel or high design -- even if it is green?

If it's true that recycled plastic is easier to mine than petroleum at the bottom of the ocean -- it should be cheaper.

If it's true that conserving water and heat is less expensive than water guzzling manufacturing processes -- it should start paying off soon in lower costs.

If it's true...

The mantra that consumers are willing to pay more for green is not the best policy in the face of increasingly severe weather patterns. Or even in the face of increasing global competition for lower prices...

A few old cliches and folk wisdom sayings come to mind:

  • A stitch in time saves nine.
  • If you live by the sword, you die by the sword.
  • Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
  • ...your children are part of the consumer class!
Well, maybe that last one isn't old or folk wisdom. But it's the new way of looking at how we work and why we want to improve conservation measures.

Our children are willing to adjust their lifestyles...at least a little. We have to smooth the boulders in their pathway and make it feasible for them to use less water, consumer less chemicals, and value quality relationships more than quality things.

It's eventually up to the leaders of business -- not regulators -- to make the green evolution happen. We have to determine that a sane society requires that we each act in a sane way. Be respectful. Be a good neighbor. Be a true friend. And make modest profits -- not obscene profits.

Respect is respect. Just like a rose is a rose is a rose.

My hope with our really low-cost publishing platform (free) is that business people will recognize that WE are the scouts on this journey to our future. We have the power to choose the pathway that our followers will, and must, follow because they trust us...and because wandering off the path is unknown and dangerous.

It behooves us to make our pathway less dangerous than the alternative and to warrant our customers', our neighbors' and our children's trust.

And yes, it takes vision about where we are going. Step by step. That's just doing our job in this wagon train.
