EPA works with businesses, organizations, governments, and consumers to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change by promoting greater use of energy efficient and other cost-effective technologies. EPA also works to improve understanding of the more potent greenhouse gases and options for sequestering carbon dioxide.

According to the National Academy of Sciences, the Earth's surface temperature has risen by about 1 degree Fahrenheit in the past century, with accelerated warming during the past two decades. There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming over the last 50 years is attributable to human activities. Human activities have altered the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases – primarily carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.

Programs include:

Climate Leaders -- a new EPA partnership with industry that encourages companies to develop long-term comprehensive climate change strategies.

Energy Star -- offers businesses and consumers energy efficient solutions - helping to save money while protecting the environment for future generations.

Clean Energy Programs -- work with industry, states and other key groups to encourage efficient, clean technologies such as combined heat and power and green power from renewable resources.

Wastewise -- works with organizations to eliminate costly municipal solid waste, benefiting their bottom line and the environment.

State and Local Programs -- work with State and Local Governments to identify and implement cost-effective programs that save energy and improve air quality.

Methane Programs -- promote profitable opportunities for reducing emissions of methane, an important greenhouse gas. This section includes: AgSTAR, Coalbed methane, Landfill Methane, Natural GasSTAR.

High global Warming Potential (GWP) Gas Programs -- work with various industries to reduce emissions of potent greenhouse gases. This section includes: Mobile Air Condition, Aluminum, Electic Power Systems, HFC-23 Emissions, Magnesium, and Semiconductor areas.

Grant and Funding Opportunities

Grant Funding Opportunities (Listing of open grant announcements)

The Climate Protection Partnerships Division (CPPD) is offering funding opportunities to non-profit organizations, state, and local governments. Major areas include educating the business and consumer sector on the benefits of improving energy performance. CPPD grants address market transformation projects that will increase public awareness of the health benefits and cost savings associated with the use of energy efficient products and services. Other proposals involve regional outreach and education on the benefits of renewable energy, encouraging state and local governments to make green power purchases.
