The Entertainment Business Case for Biodiesel: Standard Bio Diesel

US public awareness of biodiesel as an alternative to petroleum diesel is growing and Standard Bio Diesel is targeting Hollywood generators and transportation.

Green business biodiesel in Los Angeles A recent study commissioned by the National Biodiesel Board and conducted by Moore Information produced some very interesting facts about biodiesel. First, US public awareness of biodiesel as an alternative to petroleum diesel is growing. The results from the study showed that 45% of the people surveyed were aware of biodiesel, an increase of 27% from the same study conducted in 2004.

For those who fall into the 55% “not aware” category this is how the NBB defines biodiesel:

Biodiesel is the name of a cleaner burning alternative fuel, produced from domestic, renewable resources such as soybean oil or other renewable fats and vegetable oils. Biodiesel contains no petroleum, but it can be blended at any level with petroleum diesel to create a biodiesel blend. It can be used in diesel engines with few or no modifications. Biodiesel is simple to use, biodegradable, nontoxic, and essentially free of sulfur and aromatics. Biodiesel is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is legal for sale and use in the U.S. It must meet the national standard ASTM D-6751.

Basically it is a safer, healthier alternative to petroleum diesel that we can grow and make ourselves and use in our diesel engines without causing any mechanical problems.

Although the majority of the production of biodiesel takes place in the Midwest, close to the source of the feedstock, awareness of biodiesel is strongest in the West. Here in Los Angeles, more than anywhere else, Californians are embracing alternative energy sources and biodiesel is slowly yet surely finding its way into our consciousness.

One new business that is championing the cause is Standard Bio Diesel based in Woodland Hills. Formed in 2005 by husband and wife team of Voya and Trice Mikulic, Voya being a Hollywood gaffer with 20 years experience and Trice a committed environmentalist, the company added the talents of a second Hollywood gaffer, Giovani Lampassi, and recently welcomed Richard Blackledge who received a commendation from President Clinton for his work within the biodiesel community.

The company specializes in providing biodiesel to productions within the Hollywood film community.

A recent study conducted by UCLA pointed the finger at Hollywood showing the industry to be the second largest polluter in Southern California after the petroleum industry. With an industry that has a combined revenue of $29 billion and which employs nearly a quarter of a million people in the Greater Los Angeles region any additional regulations could easily chase business out of state. Bearing in mind that the majority of pollution from the industry comes from diesel trucks and generators, it isn’t hard to see why a fuel that reduces pollution by an average of 80% compared to petroleum diesel is becoming so popular in the film and television production industry.

Standard Bio Diesel has already started to blaze a trail in the entertainment industry. Their biodiesel fuel was recently used to power the Los Angeles leg of the Live Earth concert and the Los Angeles Film Festival. The popular FOX/CBS show The Unit is powered solely by Standard Bio Diesel fuel and if talks with FOX, Warner and HBO executives blossom then many more television shows and film productions may be bio-powered in the near future.

Standard Bio Diesel is also working with a number of corporate truck fleets. Unsurprisingly, the petroleum industry hasn’t over-publicized the fact that the new Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) isn’t quite as effective as its predecessor. Although taking sulfur out of the diesel fuel has some great environmental benefits, the resulting loss of lubricity, the smooth flow of the fuel through the engine, causes premature engine wear and will shrink rubber parts and hoses.

Chevron was so concerned about this engine wear that they actually issued a warning on their website stating that in a small number of engines effected by the change in fuel properties, fuel leaks could lead to potential engine fires. "The addition of biodiesel to petroleum diesel at a 20% blend, known as B20, will increase lubricity and alleviate the problem of shrinking rubber parts," says Standard's Blackledge.

Although biodiesel continues to be slightly more expensive than petro-diesel the National Biodiesel Board’s survey showed that 62% of people were willing to pay more for biodiesel. Biodiesel, although small in volume, is the fastest growing alternative fuel on the market. Sales of biodiesel for 2006 was in the region of 250 million gallons, triple the amount sold in 2005.

With the continued concern with energy and fuel supply security and the health and environmental problems associated with petroleum fuel -- the biodiesel business, young as it is, is proving itself to offer good prospects for the future.
